Mr. Smith joined the firm of Stone & Baxter on October
1, 2005 after having been a partner in the Macon
office of Arnall Golden Gregory LLP for approximately
20 years. He has concentrated his practice
primarily on bankruptcy and business litigation. He
has experience representing debtors and creditors. As
to creditors, Mr. Smith’s practice includes
a heavy emphasis on representing banks, other secured
creditors, and lessors in bankruptcy and business
litigation, in and out of court workouts, and in
protecting their rights in sales of goods under the
Uniform Commercial Code. Mr. Smith also has
significant experience in representing telecommunications
providers in telecom bankruptcy cases.
Mr. Smith is a frequent lecturer on various bankruptcy topics. In both
2004 and 2005, he was named a “Georgia Super Lawyer” by Atlanta Magazine
for his work in Bankruptcy & Workouts. He has also been included in
the 2005-2006 edition of The Best Lawyers in America. He has been
awarded an “AV” rating by Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory.
He is a member of the Macon Bar Association and the State Bar of Georgia.
He was the Chairman of the Bankruptcy Section of the State Bar of Georgia in
2000-2001, was the Secretary in 1999-2000, Treasurer 1998-1999, Legislative
Liaison in 1997-1998 and served on its Board of Directors from 1994 to 1996.
Mr. Smith was also a member of the University of Georgia Law School Alumni
Council from 1991 to 1997. He was the President of the Alumni Council in 2000-2001,
the Treasurer in 1998-1999, and the Secretary in 1997-1998.
He was a co-author of Business Associations, an Annual Survey of
Georgia Law, Mercer Law Review, 1983. He is a graduate of the Leadership Macon
program (1994) and served on the Board of Leadership Macon in 2005. He
is currently Vice President of Administration for the Central Georgia Council
of the Boy Scouts of America.
He is a graduate of Oxford College of Emory University
(AA, 1976) and the University of Georgia (BBA, 1978;
MBA, 1981; JD, Cum Laude 1981). He is
admitted to practice in the State and Appellate Courts
of Georgia, United States District Courts for the Middle,
Northern, and Southern Districts of Georgia, and the
Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals.
